In order to comply with the Equalities Act (2010), segregation between cyclists and pedestrians around the Heartsease roundabout was required. White lines were no longer considered an adequate solution as the visually impaired cannot detect them either underfoot or with the use of a cane.
After several alternatives were trialled and failed, Flexi-Tact cycle delineators were used to segregate cyclists from pedestrians. The trapezoidal design of the delineators uniquely ensures that the visually impaired can detect the white line, either by cane or underfoot, guiding them along the pedestrian side of the segregated footpath.
As the cycle delineator is surface-mounted, no excavations were required to accommodate concrete block systems, saving on cost and time. Tarmac could then be laid in "one-hit," also saving on cost and time. The surface-mounted Flexi-Tact cycle tactiles, with integrated ‘glow in the dark’ signage, reinforce segregation for the cyclist, pedestrians, and particularly the visually impaired, saving on cost and downtime.
